How to Commit and Persist (5 Big Tips)

lonely … challenged … overwhelmed … frustrated … doubtful

These are words that coaches, consultants, speakers and experts often use to describe how they feel at times on their entrepreneurial journey. (Of course, there are other words they use, but they don’t belong in a G-rated blog.) The journey of entrepreneurs is not just wine and roses. (Well, maybe wine …. )

I’ve read that it takes an average of 2 years of commitment and persistence before most entrepreneurial experts begin to really break through and experience serious results. That means 2 years of feeling challenged, lonely, frustrated, overwhelmed and filled with doubt. That’s 2 years of (let’s just be honest) PAIN! And that’s why most people don’t make it. For many people, the pain of the struggle becomes bigger than their desire for success.

So how do successful entrepreneurs have the drive to commit and persist? (And believe me, NO ONE gets a pass on the pain and the struggle – that comes with the territory.) They have the drive, quite simply, because they choose to. And nothing – nothing – can knock them off course. They’ve made a conscious, heart-felt promise to themselves to commit and persist. And they also protect that decision – that promise – by minimizing any temptations that might creep into their path.

Look, if you want to have a healthy diet, you must make a decision to buy healthy, organic foods and rid your cabinets of crappy, junk foods so that you’re not tempted to give in. And so it goes with commitment and persistence.

In fact, after listening to other experts who have achieved big success, paying close attention to their actions and combining that with what has worked for me, I’ve noticed some commonalities amongst those who choose to commit and persist:

  • Routines: Highly successful coaches, consultants, speakers and experts who commit and persist create productive routines. They structure their day – their life – in a way that encourages productivity. These are people who spend their days creating or campaigning, not wasting hours on their Twitter feed.
  • Systems of Support: Highly successful experts who commit and persist know when to outsource and automate. They make sure that they are not wasting their gifts and talents on tasks that could be better handled by someone else, or set-up to operate automatically.
  • Information Diet: Highly successful people who commit and persist do not allow the news and other sources of negative information to knock them off their game. They understand that negative messages can cause enormous amounts of stress, are detrimental to creativity and are usually out of their sphere of influence anyway.
  • Positive Influencers: Highly successful people who commit and persist surround themselves with like-minded, positive influencers and eliminate dream-stealers from their lives.
  • Coaching: Highly successful people who commit and persist are perpetual learners and know when to ask for help. They understand that learning directly from someone who has been there and done that will often take years off of their learning curve.

Commit and persist. Two little words behind powerful concepts. Guard them well and they will serve you BIG TIME.

The “I Want More Clients” Conundrum

Picture this. You were supposed to be out the door an hour ago, heading out for a weekend getaway to that quaint little beach house with your significant other. Instead you’re still on the phone with your newest coaching client – repeating much of what you said to the other 2 clients you spoke with earlier today. You knew you’d be cutting it close when you scheduled this call, but there are only so many hours in the day. If only you could clone yourself! Then you’d be out the door in a flash and on your way to relaxing with your toes squished in the sand.

That’s the conundrum of experts everywhere.

Of course you want more clients. I mean, anyone who is a coach, consultant, speaker, trainer or expert wants more clients, right? But when you get them they take up sooooo much of your time! (In fact, I’ll bet if you charge by the hour you could share stories about people taking advantage of your time, as well.)

This is what I call the “I want more clients” conundrum, because those additional clients take up more of your time and there’s only one “you” (and still only 24 hours in each day). So how can you handle all those addition clients that you’re attracting and also have time to live and enjoy  your life? It’s simple: INCOME AUTOMATION!

I love the concept of income automation because it’s all about using systems and tools that allow you to “clone” yourself through products or programs that sell while you sleep – quite literally.

Here’s an example.

I’m co-founder of an organization called Teacher Online Classes. Along with my colleague, I film and record video and audio courses for educators that they then “attend” online. That means that I do the work once – just once – after which my video and audio courses automatically sell and teach while I move along to work on other projects. I still conduct live trainings for educators from time to time, but while I’m doing that my virtual seminars are out there running  24/7. That’s income automation.

Whether you are a coach, consultant, speaker, trainer or expert in a particular area, the idea of income automation can be easily adapted to what you do. If you have certain systems that you recommend to every new client, then instead of explaining them time and time again, include a recording with your “new client package”. If you’re frazzled by all that time you’re spending on the road conducting seminars, then film some of those seminars and sell them on your website.

A fantastic book that will get your mind spinning about income automation possibilities is The 4-Hour Workweek by Tim Ferris. Although some of Tim’s approaches might be a little extreme for you, the concept is the same: Outsource and automate whatever you can – and spend more time with your toes squished in the sand.

The Simplest Productivity System EVER!

Google the word “productivity” and your head might explode. If it doesn’t, you’ll spend so much time perusing productivity systems and organizational tools that you’ll be extremely, well … unproductive. Over the years I’ve tried many “current, best” systems that required me to do things such as:

  • Categorize items on my calendar by day, week and month (turned my calendar into an unreadable mess)
  • Write down my goals each night before going to sleep (that lasted about a week)
  • Organize each day on a special form with lots of lines and text boxes (Grrrrrr)

If you’re like me, you may have also struggled through productivity pitfalls. But then I discovered something amazingly simple, and I’m going to share it with you right now. Ready? Here is it: Divide your day into campaigning and creating. That’s it.

You see, the vast majority of tasks that entrepreneurs must tackle fall into one of those two categories: campaigning or creating. At least they should! In fact, if you’re not either campaigning (implementing your marketing strategy) or creating (developing products or services that you can sell) then you might just be spending a lot of time spinning your wheels.

Seriously, this realization was life-changing for me! I now organize my time by …

  1. Making a priority list of the most important things that I should accomplish today. (Chatting with friends on Facebook should never make the list!)
  2. Labeling each to-do task as either campaigning or creating (Example: Facebook post – campaigning, Cover design for my new CD program – creating)
  3. (Drum roll – this is the most important part!) Devoting my mornings to campaigning tasks and my afternoons to creating tasks.

Actually, point number 3 was the real game-changer for me. It was startling
to realize how much time and brain power I’d been wasting in the past by switching from campaigning tasks to creating tasks. Each requires a very different mind-set, which explains my constant sense of overwhelm and frustration.

If you’re one of the many who also struggles with productivity, you might want to give my simple system a try! It’s all about simplification, don’t you think?

And speaking of simplification, I have a free, downloadable Lifestyle Blueprint you can have instant access to right here: FREE LIFESTYLE BLUEPRINT

Shhh … The Big Video Secret

How can it be that the same women who will chat it up like crazy at a networking event, or speak with confidence in front of an audience, will turn and run in fear when someone holds up a video camera? There’s just something about being seen on video (or, more accurately, seeing yourself on video) that strikes terror into the hearts of even the most confident women.

But here’s the deal. Video is here to stay. Not only that, video will increase your online visibility and increase sales in your business. Period. Video converts prospects into buying customers big time, so it’s time to embrace video. But how?

Below you’ll find my best, BIG insider secret on how to get past the fear, feel comfortable and, more importantly, craft a video routine that feels right to you. That’s right – a video routine. Because a one-time video is not enough. (That’s barely scratching the surface.) You must discover your own practice of using video that is do-able and repeatable for YOU.

Here’s the secret. Are you ready? Compensation. Yep, that’s right. The big secret to finding your own fearless video routine is compensation – and here’s how you do it:

  1. List your strengths. Maybe you’re a good speaker or a talented designer or a smart dresser or terrific PowerPoint creator. Write it all down.
  2. Match your strengths to video possibilities. There are countless ways to create great videos today: Direct to camera, screen capture (your computer screen or slideshow), interview, demonstration … let your imagination run wild. If you love graphic design, then a beautiful slideshow video is perfect for you. If you love working with people, then why not create video interviews? If you have an eye for interior decorating, then film snazzy backgrounds in your videos.
  3. Compensate. Here’s where compensation comes in. By creating videos around your natural strengths, you compensate for any fears that are holding you back. If direct to camera is terrifying, then compensate by speaking through a slideshow instead! If you don’t mind speaking direct to camera, but find that you come off a bit dull, compensate with a colorful background or fantastic outfit.

Once you identify your video strengths and use them to compensate for your perceived weaknesses, your video routine will become easier and easier. Before you know it you’ll have your own YouTube channel and we’ll all be watching your video blogs! Remember, consistency is super important, right? So find your video comfort zone and stick with it!

3 Ways to Automate Your Income

When I mention to people that I help women coaches, consultants and experts to automate their income, they usually say something like, “I think I want to do that too … what is it?” Most people love the sound of “income automation” but they’re just not sure what the term means.

Income automation is all about creating, campaigning and attracting customers through processes and systems that are automatic or, in some cases, semi-automatic. The beauty of income automation is that you can duplicate your work and “clone” yourself in many different ways. In fact, you might be out playing a game of golf or canoeing on the lake or watching a movie with your kids while your products are selling, your programs are instructing and your marketing campaigns are, well, campaigning – all on auto-pilot.

Here are 3 of my favorite income-automation products and programs:

  1. Digital products: ebooks, reports and manuals
  2. Audio programs
  3. Video programs

Any of these products/programs can be created ONCE (love that!) and then placed on a website for easy access or even burned onto CDs or DVDs, in the case of audio and video programs. The next step is to create campaigns and customer service plans that are also based on automation and duplication.

Remember, the more you automate and outsource, the more free time you have to design the lifestyle of your dreams! That’s what it’s really all about, right?

Are You Making Money While You Sleep?

Are you making money while you sleep? You certainly should be. If not, it’s time to reassess the way you are structuring your business.

In fact, if you are a coach – business, wellness, life, spiritual – or if you are an author, speaker, seminar leader or business owner who generates income based on your expertise, then making money while you sleep has never been easier.

I’ve been doing exactly that for several years by cloning myself in online classes and courses that can be purchased and “attended” 24/7, and the automation tools for doing this are of a higher quality and are easier to use than ever before.

You see, it’s all about automation. From replays of audio recordings to video marketing to email messaging campaigns – automation rules! So I thought I’d share a few of my favorite automation tips and tools with you. Many are free and some might be very familiar to you – but are you using them?

(Side note: As I was typing that last paragraph two big orders came in. See what I mean?)

  • Videos Campaigns that run 24/7 and build trust and rapport with potential clients and sell stuff to them
  • Opt-in Pages on your website that capture emails and names that you add to your ever-growing list
  • Autoresponders that send out automatic messages through email messaging services such as iContact, Aweber and Constant Contact
  • Facebook “likes” that help your messages go viral
  • LinkedIn Homepage Scroll that allows you to share your blog post with all your LinkedIn Groups
  • Virtual Assistants who take care of everything from sending out messages to researching content for the book you’re writing

These are just a few of my favorites, but in truth there are countless ways today to automate what you do and when you do it.

I bet you have some favorites too!  If so, comment below!
